Oral Health and Hygiene Education in Schererville, IN

It’s important to see a dentist regularly, but it’s just as important to maintain your oral health at home. You might only see a dentist twice each year, but you take care of your teeth at home every day. At Schererville Family Dentistry, our patients’ oral health is our first priority. We practice preventative dentistry in at our Schererville, IN office, helping you maintain healthy teeth so you can avoid extensive dental work in the future.

Oral Hygiene Education

Good oral care is crucial to helping you avoid cavities, decay, and gum disease. But oral hygiene is important for other reasons as well. Your teeth help you speak and eat, and damage to your teeth can affect these daily tasks. In addition, poor oral health is connected to other health problems such as heart disease. At Schererville Family Dentistry, we instruct our patients on how to best care for their teeth. Our youngest patients may be learning how to brush their teeth for the first time, so we explain oral hygiene to them in a simple, fun way they can understand. Even our older patients might need a refresher on some oral hygiene tips, and we’re happy to address their specific questions and concerns.

Oral Hygiene Tips

Some of the preventive oral health care tips we teach our patients include the following:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss daily
  • Eat a nutritious diet
  • Avoid excess sugar, including soda and fruit juices
  • Limit snacks
  • Ask your dentist about a fluoride mouth rinse

In addition, children under 12 should drink fluoridated water or take a fluoride supplement to prevent tooth decay.
